U.S. Marines with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, U.S. Navy Sailors aboard ships of the America Amphibious Ready Group, and members of the Japan Self-Defense Force conduct Exercise Iron Fist 23 in Japan, from Feb. 16 to March 12, 2023. The annual exercise was hosted for the first time in Japan, training our combined forces to secure and defend key maritime terrain. Iron Fist is a bilateral exercise designed to increase interoperability and strengthen the relationships between the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Navy, the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. Marines with Bravo Company, Battalion Landing Team 1/4, joined members of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force at Camp Ainoura near Nagasaki April 29 for a week long subject matter expert exchange with the Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade. The ARDB stood-up as the JGSDF's "crisis-response" force in 2018. The exchange marks the one year anniversary celebration of the ARDB. during the weeklong subject matter experts exchange, the Marines and ARDB members worked side-by-side to share information and tactics at the end of the week, both units partnered in a demonstration at Camp Ainoura. BLT 1/4 is the Ground Combat Element for the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit in Okinawa, Japan - Marines with the BLT 1/4 are experts at infantry and combined-arm tactics. The ARDB's leaders have worked closely with the 31st MEU since its founding to develop amphibious capabilities similar to a U.S. Marine Expeditionary Unit, including several exchange in Okinawa and Mainland Japan. Marines with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 265 (Reinforced), 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit took off from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni April 19, and landed aboard the JS Hyuga (DDH 181) in order to load releif supplies for the residents of the island of Kyushu. The 31st MEU is the only continually forward-deployed MEU and remains the Marine Corps' force-in-readiness in the Asia-Pacific region. (U.S. Marine Corps Video by Sgt. Royce Dorman)

Soldiers with the Japan Ground Self Defense Force (JGSDF) and US Marines with India Company, Battalion Landing Team 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines (BLT 3/5), 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (31st MEU) conduct an Assault Amphibian Vehicle (AAV) surf qualification on Camp Schwab, Okinawa, Japan as part of the Japanese Observer Exchange Program. Integrating with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit's Battalion Landing Team, soldiers with Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force conducted an amphibious raid exercise alongside their Company F., BLT 2/1 counterparts here in Guam. The training evolution was part of the JGSDF's integration period with the MEU during the Marines' Fall Patrol deployment throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Following these integration events, distinguished members of both nations' militaries participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the South Pacific Memorial Peace Park, Sept. 23. LtGen.
