Sgt. Samuel Helmuth, left, and Gunnery Sgt. Bruce Richard request ammunition from the crew of a Light Armored Vehicle during gunnery training aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1), underway in the South China Sea, Sept. 24, 2018. Helmuth is an LAV crewman and Richard is the platoon sergeant, both with Weapons Company, Battalion Landing Team, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines. During the training, the Marines staged LAVs atop the Wasp’s flight deck to refine their gunnery capabilities to act as ship security. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible force ready to perform a wide-range of military operations. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl.
