Lance Cpl. Gage E. Mock, a field radio operator with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and a native of Gridley, Ill., lays the last strip of duct tape on a field-expedient ultra-high frequency antenna atop a building, March 14. Four soda cans wrapped in copper strands inside an RF cable wire and mounted on a steady base held enough signal strength to send and receive radio messages in the event the primary and secondary UHF systems became inoperable, adding an extra communication asset. The training is part of the 31st MEU’s Certification Exercise, where the MEU’s operational capabilities are evaluated by the Special Operations Training Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force, during the unit’s regularly-scheduled Spring Patrol.
