Col. Andrew MacMannis (left), the commanding officer of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, explains MEU capabilities to Vice Adm. Scott H. Swift (right), commander, U.S. 7th Fleet, Sept. 29. Swift visited Essex and was given a tour of the ship and briefed on its capabilities. The 31st MEU is currently preparing to conduct certification exercises. The 31st MEU is the only continually forward-deployed MEU, and remains the nation’s force-in-readiness in the Asia-Pacific region.
