Colonel John E. Merna, commanding officer of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, greets Lt. Col. Robert S. Weiler, commanding officer of 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, upon the battalion’s arrival to Okinawa here, May 22. The Marines of 2/4 arrived in Okinawa to become the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit’s new battalion landing team, replacing 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, after their six-month tour with the MEU. The 31st MEU is the only continuously forward-deployed MEU and is the Marine Corps’ force in readiness in the Asia-Pacific region.
