Lance Cpl. Jake Hansen, a reconnaissance Marine with a reconnaissance platoon attached to Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, fires an M-32 grenade launcher at a target on an unknown distance range as a part of exercise Balikatan 2013 here, April 9. The M-32 is a man packed, 6 round capacity, 40mm grenade launcher with ability to engage targets at ranges up to 350 to 400 meters away. Balikatan is an annual Republic of the Philippines-U.S. military bilateral training exercise with the focus of improving interoperability to more effectively provide relief and assistance in the event of natural disasters and other crises. The 31st MEU is the only continuously forward-deployed MEU and is the Marine Corps’ force in readiness in the Asia-Pacific region.
