Marines with Combat Logistics Battalion 31, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, prepare to board a CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter on the flight deck of the USS Essex (LHD 2), Oct 7. The Marines are preparing to participate in a non-combatant evacuation operation as the first event of MEU's certification exercise. The 31st MEU is the only continuously forward-deployed MEU and remains the nation’s force in readiness in the Asia-Pacific region.
