Destroyed buildings rest here after the 9.0 earthquake and following tsunami here, March 27. The 31st MEU and Amphibous Squadron 11 picked up Japanese utility repair vehicles from the port in Kessenuma and delivered food, water, comfort items and the vehicles to residents on this isolated island. The island of Oshima has been cut off from the mainland since the earthquake and tsunami March 11. The operation demonstrated the MEU’s expeditionary capabilities in ship-to-shore amphibious operations.
