A CH-53E Sea Stallion helicopter launched from the forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) and assigned to Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 262 transports humanitarian assistance and disaster relief supplies to Miyako, Japan. USS Essex, USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) and USS Germantown (LSD 42) with the embarked 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit are currently operating off the coast of Hachinohe in northeastern Japan in support of Operation Tomodachi.
