Sergeant Major Robert E. Thompson
Sergeant Major, Combat Logistics Battalion 31

Sergeant Major Thompson was born in and raised in Granite City, Illinois. He attended Granite City grade school through high school where he graduated in 2004. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and attended MCRD San Diego in June 2004 with the MOS of 0311. Following graduation from recruit training he attended School of Infantry, Infantry Training Battalion at School of Infantry west, Camp Pendleton, California.

Immediately following completion of School of Infantry, Private First Class Thompson received orders to 2nd Battalion 4th Marines, Echo Company in December 2004. From June 2005 to November 2005, Private First Class Thompson deployed to Okinawa, Japan and was later promoted to Lance Corporal. He then would complete a combat deployment to Iraq from August 2006 to April 2007 as part of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit in support of Iraqi freedom. From January 2008 to June 2008 Corporal Thompson deployed to Okinawa as part of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. In 2008 he held the billet of Battalion School NCO, during which he was promoted to Sergeant in October 2008. In 2008, Sergeant Thompson re-enlisted to become a Combat Instructor at School of Infantry West.

Upon completion of the Marine Combat Instructor Course in June 2009, Sergeant Thompson received orders to Infantry Training Battalion, Echo Company. While serving as a Squad Instructor from 2009 to 2011, Sergeant Thompson was awarded two Certificates of Commendation for Combat Instructor of the Cycle. In July of 2011, Sergeant Thompson was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant and began serving as squad advisor for Infantry Squad Leaders Course at the Advanced Infantry Training Battalion. From July 2011 to June 2012, he served as Squad instructor and completed the Infantry Unit Leader's Course and obtained the MOS of 0369.

In July 2012 Staff Sergeant Thompson received orders to 3rd Battalion 7th Marines where he held the billet of 81mm Mortar Platoon Sergeant in Weapons Company. He deployed to Afghanistan OEF in support of Combat Operations in 2013 to 2014. From April 2015 to October 2015 Staff Sergeant Thompson, deployed to Jordan as part of SPMAGTF 2-15. Following the deployment he received orders to Marine Combat Instructor School West.

Upon completion of the Marine Combat Instructor Course in July 2016 Staff Sergeant Thompson received orders to Advanced Infantry Training Battalion, Infantry Unit Leaders Course where later he was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in September. Gunnery Sergeant Thompson served as a squad instructor with IULC from 2016 to 2017 until being selected to become the chief instructor for Combat Instructor School. From 2017 to 2019 Gunnery Sergeant Thompson, held the billet of Chief Instructor for Marine Combat Instructor School for six cycles graduating over 300 Combat Instructors as 0913's. In 2019 Gunnery Sergeant Thompson received orders to 3rd Battalion 8th Marines.

From November 2019 to March 2020 Gunnery Sergeant Thompson, held the billet of H&S Company Gunnery Sergeant. In March of 2020 he was promoted to First Sergeant Thompson in which he received orders to 3rd Battalion 8th Marines Kilo Company, as Company First Sergeant from March 2020 to June 2021. During this time First Sergeant Thompson deployed to Okinawa Japan as well as Camp Fuji in support of Joint Exercise Littoral Strike.

In June 2021 First Sergeant Thompson received orders to Marine Wing Support Squadron 272, Airfield Operations Company as Unit Senior Enlisted Leader, where he served until 2023. In 2023 First Sergeant Thompson transferred to Headquarters and Service Company as a Unit Senior Enlisted Leader.

In April 2024 First Sergeant Thompson was promoted to his current rank of Sergeant Major and reported to Combat Logistics Battalion 31 to serve as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader in May of 2024.

First Sergeant Thompson's personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal in lieu of 4th award, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal in lieu of 3rd award and Combat Action Ribbon.
