Lance Cpl. Matthew J. Rodgers (right), a rifleman with Company C., Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, kneels next to his long-time friend Caleb Getscher upon returning from a deployment to Afghanistan. The two friends, who enlisted together, had not seen each other since Getscher was severely injured by an improvised explosive device during the recent deployment. For his accomplishments and sacrifices while deployed, the mayor of Rodgers’ hometown of Gaithersburg, Md., issued a proclamation making Nov. 19, “Matthew Rodgers Day.” The honor of having a namesake day in his hometown reminds Rodgers of the continued courage of his long-time friend, Getscher, who was severely wounded by an improvised explosive device, and the love of his family.
