An American flag is placed on a pile of debris which used to be the home of a local resident here. The residents of the area placed the flag as a sign of thanks to the U.S. Marines, who are participating in Operation Field Day, a clearing and cleanup project designed to open harbor access and area roads on the isolated island. As Marines cleared the area, they took time to locate personal items which could be salvaged by the local residents. The 31st MEU is participating in Operation Tomodachi at the request of the Japanese government after the 9.0 earthquake and tsunami devastated the northeast coast of Japan.
