Members of Japanese Self Defense Force and sailors with the Amphibious Squadron 11 beach landing team conduct planning before they survey damage in the area, March 23. Marine CH-46E pilots with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 262 (Reinforced), 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, flew the beach landing team to Kesennuma to conduct the survey in preparation for disaster relief support to the area. Assistance is being coordinated with the government of Japan's ongoing relief efforts, after a 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck Japan causing widespread damage. As part of Operation Tomodachi, the 31st MEU is ready to support our Japanese partners and to provide assistance when called upon.
