The 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, embarked aboard the USS Essex (LHD 2) heads for the coast of Japan, March 16. The 31st MEU is transiting to be ready to assist ongoing relief efforts as directed, after an earthquake and tsunami struck northeastern mainland Japan March 11. The 31st MEU is ready to support our Japanese partners and to provide assistance when called upon.
