Lieutenant Colonel Michael R. Hyde
31st Marine Expeditionary Unit Executive Officer
Lieutenant Colonel Michael Hyde is a UH-1Y Pilot and currently serving as the 31st MEU Executive Officer at Camp Hansen in Okinawa Japan.
Lieutenant Colonel Hyde is a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He entered the Marine Corps in June of 1999 after graduating from Penn State University and earning a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Administration of Justice. He attended and graduated from the Summer OCC class in 1999 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps on 23 Aug 1999. He was assigned to The Basic School where he graduated from Fox Company BOC 6-99 on 17 March 2000 and assigned to flights school in Enid, Oklahoma and Milton, Florida. Lieutenant Colonel Hyde was designated as a Naval Aviator on 15 June 2001. Following SERE school and training at HMLA/T-303 in the UH-1N, Lieutenant Colonel Hyde reported to HMLA-367 at Camp Pendleton, CA in March of 2002.
While at HMLA-367, Lieutenant Colonel Hyde completed three deployments. He deployed to Okinawa for one year as part of a Unit Deployment Program (UDP) from June 2002 to June of 2003. His follow on deployments were to Camp Taqaddum, Iraq, from August 2004 to March 2005 and from October 2006 to April 2007 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During this time, he served HMAL-367 as an Operations Schedule Writer, Flight Line Officer in Charge, Quality Assurance Officer, Aviation Safety Officer, Pilot Training Officer/Flight Officer and a Night Systems Instructor.
In July of 2007, Lieutenant Colonel Hyde reported to The Basic School and was assigned as a Warfighting Instructor. Following one year as a Warfighting Instructor, Lieutenant Colonel Hyde served as the Staff Platoon Commander for Charlie Company BOC 03-08 and Alpha Company BOC 01-09. In June of 2009 Lieutenant Colonel Hyde assumed command of Headquarters and Service Company at Instructor Battalion.
Following his time at The Basic School, Lieutenant Colonel Hyde attended the United States Marine Corps’ Command and Staff College in Quantico, VA. While there he earned a Master’s Degree in Military Studies.
In September of 2011, Lieutenant Colonel Hyde returned to the fleet where he was assigned the duties as the Assistant Aircraft Maintenance Officer for HMLA-467 in Cherry Point, NC. From September of 2012 to November of 2013, he was assigned to the 26 Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) with VMM-266 (REIN) as the Aircraft Maintenance Officer. He deployed with the 26 MEU aboard the USS KEARSARGE. Following the MEU he was assigned as the Aviation Safety Officer for Marine Air Group-29 at MCAS New River.
In the summer of 2014, Lieutenant Colonel Hyde reported to Marine Corps University where he was selected for and assigned the duties as a Faculty Advisor for Expeditionary Warfare School. Lieutenant Colonel Hyde was the lead instructor for the Marine Air Assault Task Force Sub Course as well as a Faculty Advisor for the 2015 and 2016 Academic Year.
In May of 2016, Lieutenant Colonel Hyde completed the UH-1Y conversion syllabus at HMLAT-303 in order to prepare for his follow on assignment to VMM-262 (REIN) in Okinawa Japan as the Executive Officer for the Air Combat Element as a part of the 31st MEU. He deployed with VMM-262 (REIN) and the 31st MEU onboard the USS BONHOMME RICHARD for the 16.2 Fall Patrol and the 17.1 Spring Patrol. Following that tour, in June of 2017, he was reassigned to the 31st MEU to assume the duties as the Executive Officer at the 31st MEU where he is currently serving.
